A linear equation is an equation where all the variables are to the
first power. The goal is always to get the variable by itself on one
side of the equation. When we solve a linear equation, we apply the
order of operations in reverse. That is, we add or subtract terms
to both side of the equation to isolate the variable and then we use
multiplication or division to get a coefficient of one next to the
variable.
