To describe a man who takes a taxi for $5, then buys 4 magazines @ $3 a piece and then takes a bus for $2, we might write:

Purely with numbers we would write:

Notice that we multiply before we add because $12 is what was spent on magazines. For the same reason it makes sense in this problem, we always multiply before we add.
